Leather Sofa Cleaning in Glasgow: Before and After

Leather sofas hide dirt well, until one day they do not. The seats go grey, the arms and headrests darken where hands and heads rest, and a light suite starts to look a shade darker than it used to.

Most of the time the leather is not worn. It is dirty. Body oils, dust and everyday grime build up on the surface and in the grain, and a proper clean brings the colour back.

A real before and after

This cream leather two seater had turned grubby from everyday use. After a clean and condition, it is back to its proper colour.

How we clean leather

Leather needs a gentler clean than fabric.

  • We check the leather and its finish first.
  • We clean it gently, paying most attention to the seats, arms and headrests where the dirt builds up.
  • We wipe the lifted dirt away.
  • We condition it, so it keeps its texture, colour and strength and stays soft.

Leather and heat do not mix. Here is why heat and hot water damage a leather sofa.

What a clean can and cannot fix

A clean lifts dirt and grime and many everyday marks, and brings back colour that was only hidden under dirt. It will not fix:

  • cracks, tears or holes
  • peeling or flaking on the surface
  • colour that has worn away or faded in the sun
  • burns, or ink and dye that has soaked into the leather

Those need a leather repair specialist. We clean leather, we do not repair it, and we will tell you before we start what a clean will and will not do.

How often should leather be cleaned?

Every 12 to 18 months suits most sofas, leather or fabric. A suite that gets heavy daily use, or lives with pets and young children, may need it more often.

Looking after leather between cleans

  • Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators and fires.
  • Dust it with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Blot spills straight away with a dry cloth, and do not rub.
  • Avoid baby wipes, washing up liquid and household sprays, which can strip the finish.
  • Use a conditioner made for leather now and then.
